Stop Esso
Esso is the UK part of Exxon, the US oil giant, whose influence was partly responsible for the USA reneging on their commitment to the Kyoto protocol (the international agreement to reduce greenhouse gasses).
Somerset Greenpeace and others have joined Taunton Friends of the Earth in East Reach outside the Esso filling station where we have held lively joint demonstrations to highlight Esso as the 'No 1 Global Warming Villain'.
We waved banners, hung placards and leafleted so many (mostly receptive) drivers that we quickly ran out of leaflets.
With increased flooding a serious concern in Taunton and the Levels, we converted the cold pavements of winter Taunton into a sunny 'Taunton-on-Sea' with a lifeboat, summer shorts, sunglasses and parasols.
The demos were well covered by the local press and radio, and there was a lot of "hooting in support" from passing motorists.
The public clearly understand the problem so it's time for Esso to catch up.
